Cassali,G.D.; Silva,P.; Rêma,A.; Gärtner,F.; Gobbi,H.; Tafuri,W.L.; Schmitt,F.C..
The authors describe their experience with an automated immunohistochemical system applied to canine tissue samples. Twenty human cellular markers specific monoclonal and polyclonal antibodies and two different antigen retrieval methods were used in normal and neoplastic breast tissue, as well as skin samples obtained from female dogs of pure and mixed breeds. The antibodies tested were the most frequently used in human and veterinary medicine studies, employed with diagnostic purposes in breast pathology, as well as in cancer research. Most of them may be used to study other normal and abnormal tissues and included cytokeratins, progesterone receptor, c-erbB2, p53, MIB-1, PCNA, EMA, vimentin, desmin, alpha-actin, S-100, pan-cadherin, and E-cadherin. The...

Analysis of EGFR and HER-2 expressions in ductal carcinomas in situ in canine mammary glands Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Silva,I.L.D.; Dias,A.P.M.; Bertagnolli,A.C.; Cassali,G.D.; Ferreira,E..
Biomolecular evidence has shown that ductal carcinoma in situ(DCIS) may develop into invasive carcinoma of the canine mammary gland, and mutations in proto-oncogenes HER2 and EGFR; two members of the family of epidermal growth factor receptors, may be involved in this process. The purpose of this study was the characterization of the immunohistochemical expression of the EGFR and HER2 proteins in the process of neoplastic transformation, supposedly present in ductal carcinomas in situin canine mammary glands. Fifteen cases of DCIS were evaluated, with a higher expression of HER2 and EGFR being observed in low-grade carcinomas when compared with high-grade neoplasms, and with a high positive statistical correlation in the latter. Results suggest that...

Clinical and pathological aspects of multicentric hemangiosarcoma in a Pinscher dog Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Martins,B.D.C.; Torres,B.B.J.; Rodriguez,A.A.M.; Gamba,C.O.; Cassali,G.D.; Lavalle,G.E.; Martins,G.D.C.; Melo,E.G..
A 3-year-old female Pinscher dog was presented with a history of lameness and pain in hind limbs for one week which acutely progressed to non-ambulatory paraparesis. The dog had been apathetic and anorexic during the six days prior to presentation. The neurological findings were compatible with upper motor neuron signs to the left hind limb due to a spinal cord compressive mass on the twelfth thoracic vertebral body. On the other hand, signs of lower motor neurons to the right hind limb were due to a mass with a pathological fracture in the right proximal femur, compressing the sciatic nerve. A histopathological analysis of all organs revealedthe proliferation of endothelial cells showingin filtrative growth and organization into vascular structures with a...

Cystadenocarcinoma simulating hemangiosarcoma of the salivary gland in dog: case report Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Gamba,C.O.; Damasceno,K.A.; Campos,C.B.; Ferreira,E.; Cassali,G.D..
Cystadenocarcinoma is regarded as a rare adenocarcinoma variant in animals. This work reports the case of an 8-year-old female Poodle dog with salivary gland cystadenocarcinoma with morphological characteristics similar to a hemangiosarcoma. Histopathological analysis showed a tumor mass with cystic formations containing a large amount of red blood cells. In order to distinguish these two entities, periodic acid Schiff (PAS) staining and immunohistochemical analysis were carried out with the use of cytokeratin AE1/AE3 (CK) and CD31-specific antibodies. Neoplastic cells were PAS-negative, CK-positive and CD31-negative confirming their epithelial origin. Based on the findings, the diagnosis of high grade cystadenocarcinoma was established.

Epidemiological, clinical and pathological evaluation of overall survival in canines with mammary neoplasms Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Nunes,F.C.; Campos,C.B.; Teixeira,S.V.; Bertagnolli,A.C.; Lavalle,G.E.; Cassali,G.D..
ABSTRACT Canine mammary neoplasms (CMNs) are the most frequent lesions and in female dogs. However, studies correlating pathological criteria with clinical evolution in female dogs with mammary neoplasms are scarce. The present study aims to present epidemiological, clinical-pathological and overall survival data to help establish the prognosis and understand the biological behavior of CMNs. A total of 1539 cases were included (85% malignant and 13% benign). Tumor size was an important prognostic factor and was associated with overall patient survival (P< 0.0001). Most dogs diagnosed with malignant neoplasms (83%) had initial clinical staging, although 17% had regional or distant metastases at the time of diagnosis and lower overall survival (P<...

Evaluation of 99mTc-HYNIC-βAla-Bombesin(7-14) as an agent for pancreas tumor detection in mice BJMBR
Carlesso,F.N.; Fuscaldi,L.L.; Araújo,R.S.; Teixeira,C.S.; Oliveira,M.C.; Fernandes,S.O.A.; Cassali,G.D.; Reis,D.C.; Barros,A.L.B.; Cardoso,V.N..
Pancreatic adenocarcinoma is important in oncology because of its high mortality rate. Deaths may be avoided if an early diagnosis could be achieved. Several types of tumors overexpress gastrin-releasing peptide receptors (GRPr), including pancreatic cancer cells. Thus, a radiolabeled peptide derivative of gastrin-releasing peptide (GRP) may be useful as a specific imaging probe. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the feasibility of using99mTc-HYNIC-βAla-Bombesin(7-14)as an imaging probe for Capan-1 pancreatic adenocarcinoma. Xenographic pancreatic tumor was developed in nude mice and characterized by histopathological analysis. Biodistribution studies and scintigraphic images were carried out in tumor-bearing nude mice.
